Deposit & Damage Policy

How security deposits are actually held, claimed against, and released.

1. How the Deposit Hold Works

Listings with a security deposit place an authorization hold on the borrower's saved card at pickup — the moment the item changes hands, not at checkout and not at booking. A hold is not a charge: no money moves unless a late fee or an approved damage claim requires it.

2. Clean Returns

If the item is returned on time and in the condition it was rented in, the hold releases in full automatically once the booking is completed. The borrower is never actually charged.

3. Late Returns

A late return can result in a late fee. The fee is captured from the deposit hold, and any remaining balance is released. See the Cancellation & Refund Policy for the late-fee math.

4. Damage Claims

If an item comes back damaged, the owner can file a claim against the security deposit within 48 hours of the item being marked returned, with photos and a description of the damage. Claims are reviewed by momentarily and are capped at the listing's deposit amount, however many days the item was out.

5. If the Hold Has Expired

Authorization holds don't last forever. If a hold has expired by the time a late fee or an approved claim needs to be collected, the corresponding amount is charged to the borrower's saved card instead, capped the same way the hold would have been.
